The big HR buzz word right now, or at least for the past few years, has been “Employee Engagement.” The best way, in my opinion, to start your journey in employee engagement is employee recognition. Employee recognition can be tricky as it is dependent upon the employee’s preferences. Want to recognize that introverted, shy employee who thinks public recognition is akin to waterboarding? Want to recognize the outgoing employee who thinks the emailed “Thank you” is similar to the 70s style sweater Grandma gave you for Christmas 2017? In other words, recognizing your employees is tricky. You can’t just do what you would like an assume your employees will like what you use. Your recognition program needs to be flexible and able to stretch to fit what your employees like.
