#HRSocialHour Twitter Chat with Career Arc

Jon & I had a blast in Hollywood at the first annual CareerArc Embarc Conference. You can see some of the awesome content at the Wakelet link. As we both decompress from the trip (my mind is just overflowing with information – need to get it into a couple of blog posts), we are thrilled to welcome CareerArc and Caroline Vernon to the October chat on Outplacement. Outplacement is something that CareerArc has recently brought on as a service, and an area of HR that we don’t like to talk about much — yet one that many of us have been affected by in one way or another. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past year of #HRWonderWomen: we’ve got to talk about those uncomfortable topics to make it easier (not easy, easier) to have the conversations.

In the late 1990s, I worked for United Airlines. It’s where I got my start in HR. It’s also where I had my first experience with a lay off. I was with UAL when 9/11 happened. I worked for a couple of weeks after that tragedy before I was furloughed, along with most of my recruitment colleagues. I moved to Grand Rapids MI then, where Rocky was working, for what I hoped was a temporary move, but ended up being somewhat permanent. My furlough became permanent towards the end of November that year. UAL had assistance with how to sign up for unemployment, job hunting, interview tips, and all online (remember, this was back when the internet was still kind of new & I would go to the library to use a computer for 30 minutes at a time). I probably would have used it more had I stayed in Denver. I’m still happy I moved to Grand Rapids (and then Richmond, and then Billings, and then Brookings) and I’m still impressed with the services UAL was able to offer at a time when you had to go to the Unemployment Office and fill out a paper application, and follow up on the phone weekly. The world has changed a lot in the last 18 years and Career Arc is working to make this uncomfortable situation a little easier on all involved.
